Optimizing the Development Process
VES LLC (VES), a provider of technology solutions designed to meet U.S. defense requirements, developed its Ground Vehicle Operating System (GVOS) as part of its commitment to advancing military software infrastructure.
Basing GVOS on Wind River® Linux LTS helped VES to optimize its development process, allowing the company to focus its resources on enhancing system capabilities and delivering mission-critical solutions.
RELIABILITY AND ADAPTABILITY FOR FIELDED DEFENSE SYSTEMS
VES designs, delivers, and supports secure, high-performance software solutions for tactical ground vehicles. The company has extensive experience in developing custom infrastructure software, integrating embedded platform and command-post systems, and prototyping emerging technologies for tactical edge architectures, with attention to developing and deploying the Mission Command Infrastructure architecture. It specializes in creating government off-the-shelf (GOTS) embedded Linux-based platforms customized for military operational requirements.
VES developed GVOS for the Program Executive Officer (PEO) Ground Combat Systems (GCS) and U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC) Armaments Center, Weapons and Software Engineering Center (WSEC). The Linux-based platform, designed for U.S. Army ground vehicles, is optimized for specific hardware architectures, cyber-hardened, and integrated with required application functionality.
Designed to support mission-critical defense applications, GVOS delivers performance approaching that of a real-time operating system. Initially built for specific hardware architectures, GVOS has since expanded to support a wider range of platforms. To ensure continuous improvement and compliance, VES regularly updates the system to integrate new features and maintain security standards.
GVOS’s flexible architecture permits customization to meet evolving program requirements while maintaining cybersecurity and operational compliance. VES is exploring the integration of over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities as a future enhancement, in collaboration with partners, to support the deployment of security patches and system updates. This approach would help ensure the long-term reliability and adaptability of fielded defense systems.

Department of Defense (DOD) customers require sustained support throughout a program lifecycle. Wind River’s 10-year support offering helps mitigate the risks associated with providing commercial support to the DOD.
VES based its GVOS Linux platform on Wind River Linux LTS. One reason: Wind River Linux helps VES maintain a robust patch and update system, ensuring continuous compliance and high performance, while adhering to military platforms’ stringent requirements.
This partnership includes release updates as well as continuous monitoring and remediation of common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs). Sourcing Linux support from Wind River was more efficient and cost-effective than maintaining an in-house support team.
