Wind River and Freescale Deliver Linux® OS-Based Enablement Solution for Multicore MPC5121e Processor

New embedded computing platform for Power Architecture(TM) processor targets high-growth embedded mass market

MUNICH, Germany (Freescale Technology Forum) – Oct. 16, 2007 – Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), and Freescale Semiconductor have introduced an enablement platform that addresses growth opportunities in the embedded mass market. The joint platform is designed to simplify and accelerate application development for embedded computing applications using Freescale's multi-core MPC5121e processor and the Wind River Linux operating system (OS).

The joint MPC5121e platform consists of a Freescale hardware development kit bundled with Wind River's software optimized for the 32-bit MPC5121e processor built on Power Architecture™ technology. The bundled offering includes a choice of Commercial-Grade Linux or Wind River® VxWorks operating systems, Wind River Workbench (the industry's leading Eclipse-based set of development tools), a feature-rich board support package (BSP) and a hardware development system optimized for the MPC5121e.

In delivering the MPC5121e development platform, Wind River and Freescale have merged their ecosystems for Linux OS support for the MPC5121e processor. The companies now offer a common roadmap for integration of joint Linux OS-based enablement solutions. This cooperation around Wind River Linux OS for the MPC5121e is expected to unleash further growth and innovation in the embedded mass market. In addition, the expanded relationship enables Wind River and Freescale to deliver tightly integrated, tested and scalable enablement solutions. The bundled offering is designed to help automotive and embedded system developers speed time-to-market, enhance system reliability and reduce cost through better integration and optimized development tools.

The MPC5121e development platform targets a wide range of automotive applications including next-generation telematics systems, digital displays used in intelligent dashboards and vision processing systems. The joint platform is also designed to speed development for a wide variety of consumer and industrial applications, such as digital media servers, digital televisions, non-automotive transportation systems, health-care equipment, and industrial automation and control systems.

In addition to the choice of run times and Wind River development tools bundled with the MPC5121e development board, customers can leverage Wind River's Professional Services and 24/7 customer support to further tailor the platform solution without being distracted from innovating at the device-differentiating application level. Wind River Automotive Services Practice employs world-class staff, processes and technology with significant automotive device expertise to reduce risk for automotive device development.

About the MPC5121e processor
The MPC5121e processor is Freescale's most powerful, highly integrated device for telematics applications, as well as industrial and commercial applications that require sophisticated graphics, multimedia and real-time audio processing. A multi-core system-on-chip (SoC) device, the MPC5121e combines an e300 core built on Power Architecture technology with an integrated 2D/3D graphics core and a fully programmable 32-bit RISC-based multimedia acceleration core optimized for audio processing. The device offers a wide range of connectivity options, including USB, CAN, Ethernet and SDIO.

The MPC5121e processor is designed for application code compatibility with existing solutions based on the MPC5200 architecture. This compatibility provides easy scalability across product solutions to help developers bring new telematics systems with the latest features to market quickly and at a lower cost. Historically, Wind River supported the MPC5200 architecture with VxWorks. The availability of Wind River Linux OS tightly coupled with Freescale's MPC5121e development boards expands the application possibilities for automotive and embedded system development.
