Wind River Releases TINA for iSCSI Initiators for Development of iSCSI-Enabled Storage Networking Devices

IP-Based Storage Networking Platform Named an N+I Best of Interop Finalist

NETWORLD + INTEROP, LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Booth 3015), May 7, 2002 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected devices, today released Tornado for Intelligent Network Acceleration (TINA) for iSCSI Initiators a development platform for IP-based storage networking devices. TINA for iSCSI Initiators bundles Wind Rivers TINA TCP/IP offload engine with an Internet SCSI (iSCSI) protocol layer, providing network equipment manufacturers with all necessary hardware and software components needed to develop iSCSI-based storage networking devices. Wind River has leveraged its expertise in TCP/IP offload and applied it to the rapidly growing IP-based storage network market, enabling manufacturers to quickly build iSCSI-based storage networking devices including IP-based host bus adapters (HBAs), storage routers and other iSCSI-enabled devices.

iSCSI-based storage networking enables block storage data to be transmitted via TCP/IP and Ethernet locally or globally via the Internet. By leveraging the reduced costs, superior interoperability and long-term performance curve of Ethernet and TCP/IP, iSCSI promises to find wide adoption in the storage networking market. Gartner predicts that the iSCSI initiator market will increase from a 2002 market value of $590 million to $1.22 billion in 2005. TINA for iSCSI Initiators provides both complete gigabit Ethernet (GbE) TCP/IP offload support and a draft standard version 0.8 compliant iSCSI protocol layer, enabling storage networking manufacturers to quickly and easily develop iSCSI-enabled storage devices.

iSCSI is a key storage networking technology that will become increasingly important over time, as more OEMs adopt it in their IP-based devices, said James Opfer, Chief Analyst, Gartner Dataquest. The cost savings and overall user benefits of iSCSI create substantial market opportunities for companies that can bring to market high value technologies enabling complex IP-based storage networks.

As a natural extension of our TINA product line, TINA for iSCSI Initiators integrates the technology found in our original TCP/IP offload platform and applies it directly to the rapidly growing storage networking market, said Dave Fraser, group vice president and general manager of Wind Rivers Networks business unit. TINA for iSCSI Initiators delivers significantly reduced development time and expense, allowing manufacturers to quickly get products to market and establish an early position in the emerging IP-based storage market. It also provides an ideal solution for SAN vendors migrating their product lines from costly Fibre Channel transports to the much more affordable and increasingly widespread TCP/IP and Ethernet networking technologies.

TINA for iSCSI Initiators includes the TINA Reference Platform supporting the Intel 80310 chipset and 80321 I/O processor based on Intel XScale Microarchitecture. It also supports the Intel 82543 and 85244 integrated MAC/PHY controllers, providing superior performance and reliability. The TINA Reference Platform, included with the TINA for iSCSI Initiators software package, enables storage networking device manufacturers to quickly and easily begin development of iSCSI-based storage networking products.

About TINA for iSCSI Initiators
TINA for iSCSI Initiators is comprised of the Tornado integrated development environment, including the IxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS), which shares the same kernel and full application programming interface (API) as the VxWorks RTOS, and is specifically designed for high-throughput I/O environments. It also includes a draft standard 0.8 compliant version of the iSCSI protocol, and will support the 1.0 version when ratified. TINA for iSCSI Initiators also includes a specifically modified TCP/IP stack and drivers to support GbE.

Best of Interop Finalist
TINA for iSCSI Initiators has been named a finalist in the Best of Interop Awards in the category of networked storage. Editors from Network Computing, InformationWeek and EE Times selected TINA for iSCSI Initiators as one of the best in its category. Over 250 products were entered in this years competition.

Availability
TINA for iSCSI Initiators is currently available for beta customers and will be made fully available in June of this year, supporting Windows NT / 2000 and Linux-based host systems.
