Adoption of WIND RIVER PLATFORMS and New Enterprise Licensing Model on Target--Crosses 1,000 Enterprise License Seats Milestone

Alameda, Calif.--May 20, 2003--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND), the worldwide market leader in embedded software and services, today announced that the company delivered against its previously stated objective of ending the first quarter of fiscal year 2004 with more than 1,000 enterprise license seats booked. To date, more than 100 global customers across Wind River's vertical markets are moving beyond the operating system and embracing WIND RIVER(R) PLATFORMS. Early adopters include BAE Systems, Fluke Networks, Huawei Technologies, Hughes Network Systems, Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Pace Micro Technology, Qualcomm, Raytheon, Samsung, Sanyo, Sony and more.

Last November, Wind River announced WIND RIVER PLATFORMS, the industry's first market-specific integrated embedded platforms, providing highly integrated, proven technology tuned for specific markets, and designed to allow customers to improve development efficiencies, accelerate time to market and enhance product reliability. Wind River also announced a subscription based licensing model--the first of its kind in the embedded industry. The new model was designed to help customers approach software development with an enterprise-wide focus, gain control of development costs and speed time to profitability.

"We are pleased with the industry response to our PLATFORMS and the new licensing model, and we are proud to announce that we met our goal of ending the quarter with the strong adoption of the PLATFORMS and more than 1,000 enterprise license seats booked to date," said Tom St. Dennis, president and chief executive officer for Wind River Systems. "In only a few short months, we have rolled out the market-specific integrated embedded platforms and a new licensing model to provide our customers an easier and better way of doing business with Wind River."

"WIND RIVER PLATFORM for Industrial Devices provides us with the proven technology and customized services to meet our critical business needs," said Ed Moore, research and development manager with Fluke Networks, a leading supplier of network installation, test and monitoring solutions. "Wind River's Platform strategy introduces much more opportunity for productivity and cost savings than we previously realized in embedded development, and this change in business model has turned Wind River into an increasingly valued partner."

The new licensing model is extremely flexible and is site, architecture, host and project independent. It includes updates and upgrades, making it much easier for customers to standardize on Wind River technology across their enterprise. Customers who buy PLATFORM products are also entitled to receive service credits that include on-site consultations, education or training.
