Wind River Announces Software Support for Xilinx Zynq-7000 EPP at DESIGN West 2012

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

DESIGN WEST 2012, SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 26, 2012 — Wind River, a world leader in embedded and mobile software, announces support for the Xilinx Zynq-7000 extensible processing platform (EPP) on its VxWorks operating system platform and Wind River Workbench. The Xilinx Zynq-7000 EPP combines the performance and power benefits of an ARM Cortex-A9 processor based system-on-chip (SoC) with the flexibility and scalability of an FPGA (field programmable gate array).

VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) and Wind River Workbench development tools support for the Zynq-7000 EPP is available now. Wind River is also currently working with Xilinx on Linux efforts. Wind River's world-class global support and services are also available to customers on this platform. Demonstrations of Wind River software support for the Zynq-7000 EPP can be seen at Xilinx booth #1708 at DESIGN West 2012.

“The high levels of performance and sophistication required from embedded devices continue to grow dramatically. In order to best meet the needs of our customers, it’s essential to be at the forefront of leading-edge silicon platforms,” said Warren Kurisu, vice president of VxWorks product management at Wind River. "By engaging early and working closely with Xilinx to tightly optimize our software and tools for the Zynq-7000 EPP, Wind River helps customers stay competitive and deliver powerful embedded devices rapidly, especially as they increasingly work with complex multi-core environments or demanding real-time requirements.”

Well suited for systems that require real-time performance, the Zynq-7000 EPP combines the powerful ARM dual-core Cortex-A9 MPCore processing system with the flexibility and scalability of Xilinx’s programmable logic in a cost-effective platform that encourages wide adoption across multiple markets. Wind River's extended hardware support for the Zynq-7000 EPP is particularly significant to customers in the aerospace and defense, industrial, medical, and networking market segments, for a variety of applications including software defined radios and other military communications technologies, consolidation of high-performance network equipment, and high-speed processing in industrial control systems.

“The Zynq-7000 EPP is a fresh direction in programmable platform design that addresses applications beyond those of traditional FPGAs by delivering on high performance, flexible configuration and multi-core processor system needs at a competitive price,” said Mark Jensen, director of processing platforms marketing at Xilinx. “We started working with Wind River very early on to ensure tight integration. Working with leaders in the embedded ecosystem, like Wind River, enables us to help customers get to market faster with highly optimized hardware and software solutions.”
