The Power of Wind River Linux Layers

The Power of Wind River Linux Layers
Alex deVries, Linux Architect, Wind River Systems
The rapid adoption of Linux in embedded systems development can be attributed to the ease and flexibility of the open
source development model. Linux for embedded systems consists of run-time components (such as a kernel, a root file
system, and a toolchain) and a build system to create an optimized run-time image. Typically, most Linux build
systems can support small projects with few developers. However, as Linux gains ground in larger devices that
potentially require several development teams or original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), a more complex build
environment needs to be supported. Wind River understands this scenario that creates complications and bugs, so we
introduced a feature in our build system called layers to specifically address this problem.
