Smart Networks Developer Forum, Frankfurt, Germany-Sept. 28, 2004-Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced its plans to support Freescale’s future PowerQUICC III processors that are designed to offer serial RapidIO functionality. Through ongoing support for Freescale and as a member of the RapidIO Trade Association, the Wind River Platform, VxWorks Edition will support the standards that help companies develop and run high-performance device software applications.
“By improving communication performance levels for networking applications, RapidIO and other high-performance interconnect technologies are rapidly gaining traction with our customers in the device software optimization market,” said Tomas Evensen, Chief Technical Officer for Wind River. “Wind River is committed to providing our customers with the support they require for the latest industry standards. And, through our relationship with Freescale and membership in the RapidIO Trade Association, we are able to provide our customers with complete Platforms, allowing them to further technology innovation.”
RapidIO is an interconnect that is intended primarily as an intra-system interface, allowing chip-to-chip and board-to-board communications with performance levels ranging from one gigabit per second to 60 gigabits per second. Wind River will expand its support for high-speed interfaces, including RapidIO, in its Wind River Platform, VxWorks Edition. In addition, the company will support future Freescale PowerQUICC III processors with Serial RapidIO technology. Customers building applications that include interconnecting microprocessors, memory, and memory mapped I/O devices in networking equipment, storage subsystems, and general purpose computing platforms can benefit from Wind River’s RapidIO support to develop and run their device software better, faster, at a lower cost and more reliably.
“Wind River plays a vital role in the RapidIO ecosystem with its support of Freescale’s expanding communications processor family,” said Iain Scott, executive director of the RapidIO Trade Association. “Designers know they can depend on Wind River for powerful design and development platforms when using RapidIO in their high-performance embedded systems.”
“As a founding member of the RapidIO Trade Association, Freescale is committed to supporting the RapidIO open standard in the market,” said Greg Shippen, chairman of the RapidIO Trade Association Technical Working Group and a system architect at Freescale. “We are excited to deliver Serial RapidIO interconnect technology to our customers through our newest PowerQUICC III processors, and with Wind River’s plan for support, our customers will be able to leverage the high performance of Serial RapidIO in their networking and communications systems.”
