Wind River Solutions for the Consumer Market

Providing Solutions for Fixed Mobile Convergence

The consumer electronics market has changed significantly in the past few years. Think mobile handsets, digital TV, and increasingly sophisticated consumer-type products, not just for the home and office, but for the automobile as well. With the convergence of wired and wireless voice, video, and data, you face tough challenges building these demanding devices, with features such as power management, minimized operating system footprint, and accelerated boot. In this low-margin, high-risk industry, your customers now expect multiple functions performed at optimal levels by a single device. This elevated demand requires device developers to change on a dime, moving from concept to deployed product as rapidly as possible without compromising quality or exceeding budget limits.

Some devices—such as cable/DSL modems and digital cameras—need real-time performance and a small footprint, while others—such as advanced set-top boxes and smart handheld devices—require rich, Web-enabled applications. To fulfill the requirement of converging technologies, we offer a range of consumer applications that provide advanced networking options, security, robust file system, device management, and advanced graphics capabilities. As a global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), Wind River offers consumer device manufacturers robust, flexible, standards-based solutions for device software development. We offer unprecedented flexibility, including an Eclipse-based development suite for the full device software development life cycle, run-time platforms based on multiple operating systems, and a professional services practice that helps you extend the capabilities of your in-house engineering team. Quickly Build and Deploy Mobile Devices

Fast boot time. Small footprint run-time environment—ideal for memory-constrained devices. Ability to decrease the time-to-market while focusing your engineering resources on differentiating value-added features. These are the benefits of the Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices. Targeted at digital video, mobile handheld, digital imaging, and broadband access, our consumer solution supports two leading operating systems for device development: VxWorks and Linux. In particular, Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices, Linux Edition, offers a complete solution that enables your developers to focus their efforts and expertise on the higher-value mobile application layer.

Both versions of the Platform for Consumer Devices come with a separate edition of the platform and are tightly integrated with Wind River Workbench, the premiere Eclipse-based device software development suite, and are backed by our extensive partner ecosystem, world-class support organization, and specialized professional services team. With our platform and support for multiple processors and operating system flexibility, your developers can standardize on a single comprehensive development suite and migrate easily from project to project.

Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices, Linux Edition
Aimed at mobile handset, digital TV, and consumer electronics manufacturers, the Platform for Consumer Devices, Linux Edition, is the premiere commercial-grade Linux development and deployment solution. It offers deep mobile capabilities including power management, fast boot, reduced footprint, and a framework to support services for telephony, connectivity, multimedia, Java, device management, and smartphone applications. Key benefits and features include the following:

  • Integrated networking, security, and other run-time technologies
  • Pristine-source Linux kernel from kernel.org, providing full visibility into the patches applied to the distribution (Linux 2.6 kernel)
  • Fully tested and validated high-quality distribution that works with supported Board Support Packages (BSPs), including TI OMAP 2430, Freescale i.MX31, and Marvell Monahans-P, -L, and -LV
  • An open source solution that reduces time-to-market without sacrificing advanced features or capabilities

Wind River Real-Time Core for Linux

Some consumer devices such as single-core mobile feature phones require the ability to support both the baseband protocol (with strong real-time requirements) and end-user applications, including streaming media and other real-time applications. The manufacturers seek the fast time-to-market and low cost that Linux offers but still need the real-time performance these types of devices demand. Wind River Real-Time Core for Linux is an optional add-on that delivers hard, real-time performance for specific applications within the device while still leveraging the benefits of open source technology.

In addition, enhanced networking capabilities are available with the Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies for Linux add-on module.

Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices, VxWorks Edition
Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices, VxWorks Edition, relies on the proven, stringent, and deterministic real-time operating system successfully deployed in millions of network equipment devices worldwide. The platform's integrated run-time technologies provide process support, advanced memory protection, and configurable error management, as well as increased POSIX compliance and TIPC. Platform for Consumer Devices integrates Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies, providing the latest standard support for IPv4/IPv6, Wi-Fi, security protocols, and device management. It also meets current demand for performance, security, wireless, and mobility functionality

Optimized Development with Workbench and Wind River Compiler
Our consumer platforms are optimized for development with Wind River Workbench, an integrated development suite based on the Eclipse framework. Workbench provides deep capabilities that support the entire development life cycle, from hardware bring-up to platform and application development, and enables standardization on one common development suite across the enterprise. Workbench is extensible and scalable, allowing developers to meet specific project needs. It can seamlessly integrate hundreds of third-party plug-ins.

In addition, Wind River Compiler combines industry-leading optimization technology with the flexibility and control needed to fully take advantage of today's complex CPUs. Our close relationship with silicon partners make it possible for us to provide highly optimized compilers for new silicon with short lead times, enabling customers to immediately gain maximum performance from their compiler/silicon investment.
