Wind River Platform for Safety Critical DO-178B
Wind River Platform for Safety Critical DO-178B delivers the stringent foundation aerospace and defense (A&D) companies need to address the safety aspects of mission-critical applications. Offering complete DO-178B certification evidence, the platform is based on the industry-leading VxWorks operating system and backed by Wind River’s 20+ years of device software experience, a broad network of hardware and software partners, a world-class support organization, and a specialized professional services team.
Key features and functionality include:
- VxWorks API Conformance: Platform for Safety Critical DO-178B offers a certifiable subset of the VxWorks API and supports C and C++. Ada is supported through partners. This subset was selected to be deterministic and testable, then built into a certifiable kernel with optional certification material available to DO-178B Level A. Debug information and nonessential features are not included in this certifiable kernel, so a full-featured VxWorks kernel is also packaged with the product for development purposes.
- DO-178B Level A Certification Evidence: The platform includes all required documentation to support DO-178B Level A, B, C, and D certification of the operating system. The certification evidence is delivered as a complete package on a CD in an advanced, hyperlinked format for easy navigation and traceability – an advantage over systems that require expensive, time-consuming certification services.
- Wind River Tornado IDE: Based on Tornado II, this development environment enables users to select from two kernels: VxWorks or the certifiable VxWorks/Cert subset. The Tornado Project Tool provides configuration checks when you choose a subset build definition that will compare your project to the subset definition. Additional benefits include outstanding embedded development and productivity tools, as well as access to third-party tools from the DSO industry’s largest partner program.
- Extensive Partner Technologies: To ensure a complete range of integrated technologies, Wind River has established the DSO industry’s widest-ranging partner ecosystem, joining forces with leading hardware and software providers to address such technologies as COTS boards, specialized compilers, certification services, and platform simulation applications.

Affiliations
At Wind River, we applaud the move toward open industry standards. Because we believe the world is changing too fast to lock our customers into proprietary technologies, we've built our DSO solution on open standards, expertly integrated and intelligently applied.
Wind River does not just embrace open standards, we're taking the lead in establishing them. Driving the Device Software Development Platform project at the Eclipse Foundation; providing TIPC support for messaging on the backplane between different operating systems; leading the way on Carrier Grade Linux with OSDL; and participating in AUTOSAR - these are just a few examples of our commitment to evolving standards.
