Wind River Workbench Development Suite

Wind River Workbench addresses the challenges individual developers and project teams face by increasing productivity, enabling collaboration between hardware and software developers, and meeting diverse development needs across an enterprise. The development suite is backed by Wind River's 20+ years of device software industry experience, a world-class support organization, and a specialized professional services team.

Workbench offers:

  • An open, unifying framework that provides seamless integration of third-party tools and tools developed to meet specific needs
  • Support for multiple target operating systems, including VxWorks and Linux
  • Support for multiple target connections and process/task/thread debugging
  • Support for multiple hosts and CPU target architectures

With our latest release of Workbench, the Workbench product line offers several configurations, enabling businesses to outfit their device software developers with a package tuned to their specific requirements.

Wind River Workbench, Platform Developer Edition

The premier Workbench configuration provides a complete development solution for devices based on VxWorks and Linux. Developers have access to the full range of capabilities required for hardware bring-up, platform and system software development, and kernel- and application-level development. This release also incorporates deep dynamic visual debugging, system analysis, and validation capabilities. Wind River Workbench is offered as a tightly integrated component of Wind River platforms or as a standalone suite.

Wind River Workbench, Application Developer Edition

This configuration of Workbench provides a powerful development solution for Linux application developers who do not require advanced capabilities, such as hardware bring-up or kernel-level development and debugging support. This edition of Workbench can be used to develop and debug on a target device in production, or natively on a Linux host.

Wind River Workbench, Desktop Edition

This configuration of Workbench is ideally suited for those looking for a baseline development suite used for rapid prototyping and development of applications running on the host. This edition offers a powerful editor, code-browsing tools, and a build system integrated with an existing tool chain. It can also be used to maintain large legacy applications, leveraging the power of its code comprehension capabilities and the integration of those capabilities with the editor.

Wind River Workbench, On-Chip Debugging Edition

This configuration of Workbench is designed to meet the needs of developers early in the device software development cycle – handling initial board bring-up and validation, developing device drivers, incorporating low-level software capabilities, and developing C/C++ applications. This edition offers a feature-rich development suite optimized for the capabilities of JTAG-based debugging using Wind River ICE and Wind River Probe. Where a target operating system is involved, target OS awareness extends the on-chip debugging capabilities of Workbench to include support for VxWorks 5.5/6.x and Linux.

Add-Ons

Workbench Unit Tester is a set of tools that enable developers to more efficiently complete unit testing, integration testing, and code coverage analysis on the tests. Integration between Workbench Unit Tester and the rest of the Workbench development suite places these capabilities within easy reach of every developer. This add-on helps to increase software quality, decrease time-to-market, and reduce support costs through better, faster, more automated testing during the development life cycle.

Workbench Diagnostics is a root-cause analysis tool set that records, isolates, diagnoses, and corrects device software faults. An add-on product to VxWorks-based platforms, Workbench Diagnostics includes run-time components for on-device data acquisition and data offload, as well as diagnostics tools to isolate and diagnose software faults. It also offers a valuable new software debugging capability. Workbench Diagnostics increases developer productivity by compressing debug cycles and eliminating unnecessary instrumentation-build-test cycles. In addition, in the event of a system failure, Workbench Diagnostics enables developers to effectively conduct step-by-step forensic analysis on a core file, uncovering the system behavior prior to the failure.

ScopeTools are powerful and dynamic visualization tools for device software applications. They provide developers with visibility into the entire platform: application code, third-party libraries, and the operating system. You can monitor variables, optimize performance, and ?nd memory problems - all while the system is still running. An integral part of Wind River Workbench, ScopeTools support both VxWorks 6.x and Wind River Linux platforms. Three ScopeTools are included with Workbench: ProfileScope, MemScope, and StethoScope. TraceScope and CoverageScope are optionally available as part of the Test and Validation package for VxWorks 6.x.

Development Tools

Wind River offers a variety of independent tools to assist device software developers from hardware bring-up to application development, enabling increased productivity and on-time, high-quality project delivery. Some of the available development tools support the newest VxWorks and Linux editions of our run-time platforms, while all of them support VxWorks 5.x and older processors.

Eclipse Device Software Development Platform Project
The Eclipse Device Software Development Platform (DSDP) project is an open-source collaborative project dedicated to providing an extensible, standards-based platform, based on Eclipse, to address a broad range of needs in the device software development space. Wind River is leading the DSDP project with the support of our customers, partners, and competitors.

The goal of the DSDP project is to provide frameworks and exemplary tools to support activities in each phase of the device software development process. The DSDP will provide a home for embedded extensions across a wide range of existing and future Eclipse projects, creating such features as complimentary extensions, and thereby increasing the usefulness and applicability of these projects for embedded development. The DSDP project will focus initially on two subprojects: target management and device debugging.
