Wind River Platform for Automotive Devices
Wind River Platform for Automotive Devices provides telematics, infotainment, navigation, and entertainment developers with a device software optimization (DSO) solution that combines VxWorks, the industry’s leading real-time operating system; Wind River Workbench, the premier open device software development suite; and essential multimedia and connectivity middleware. Platform for Automotive Devices addresses the challenges telematics developers face by offering more choice, greater flexibility, and a comprehensive partner ecosystem to facilitate tighter product integration. The platform is backed by Wind River’s 20+ years of device software industry experience, a world-class support organization, and a specialized professional services team.
Key features and functionality include:
- Real-Time Operating System Support: Platform for Automotive Devices is based on the industry-leading VxWorks operating system. VxWorks offers process and standards support, advanced memory protection, configurable error management, local GUI implementation through Wind River Media Library, increased POSIX compliance, and TIPC.
- Advanced Automotive Connectivity: The platform provides drivers and protocols for connected in-vehicle devices, consumer electronics devices, and network infrastructure. Support includes CAN, USB, Wi-Fi, and IPv4/IPv6.
- Network Security Support: The platform includes an extensive suite of security protocols to protect network data. This suite provides implementations of IPsec and IKE, Firewall and NAT, Radius Client, 802.11i wireless security, SSL, and Digital Certificates. These protocols can be used in any combination to provide secure applications that require access control, authentication, or privacy.
- Wind River Workbench: An integrated development suite based on an Eclipse framework, Workbench provides deep capabilities that support the entire development lifecycle, from hardware bring-up to product test and manufacture, and enables standardization on one common development suite across the enterprise. Workbench is extensible and scalable, allowing telematics suppliers to meet specific project needs, and it can seamlessly integrate hundreds of third-party plug-ins.
- Extensive Partner Technologies: To ensure a complete range of integrated technologies, Wind River has established the DSO industry’s widest-ranging partner ecosystem, joining forces with leading hardware and software providers to address such technologies as speech recognition and text-to-speech, Java, advanced graphics capabilities, Bluetooth, and IEEE 1394.
- Education Credits: Platform for Automotive Devices includes credits that can be used to fund education courses for project personnel, ensuring that product development gets off to a quick start and stays on schedule.

At Wind River, we applaud the move toward open industry standards. Because we believe the world is changing too fast to lock our customers into proprietary technologies, we've built our DSO solution on open standards, expertly integrated and intelligently applied.
Wind River does not just embrace open standards, we're taking the lead in establishing them. Driving the Device Software Development Platform project at the Eclipse Foundation; providing TIPC support for messaging on the backplane between different operating systems and leading the way on Carrier Grade Linux with OSDL; participating in AUTOSAR and CVTA—these are just a few examples of our commitment to evolving standards.
AUTOSAR
The AUTOSAR partnership serves to establish an open standard for automotive E/E architecture, and will serve as a basic infrastructure for the management of functions within both future automotive applications and standard software modules.
Consumer Electronics Linux Forum
Founded in July 2003, CE Linux Forum (CELF) focuses on the establishment and promotion of Linux-based digital consumer electronic products. CELF's main activities will include defining requirements for a variety of extensions in Linux-based CE products, as well as collaborating and reaching consensus with open-source projects and the Linux community, thereby promoting the proliferation of CE Linux-based digital electronics.
CVTA
The Connected Vehicle Trade Association (CVTA) is a nonprofit business league established to facilitate interaction and advance the interests of entities involved in vehicle communication. Membership is open to any corporation (except automakers), public entities, standards and specification organizations, educational institutions, and qualified individuals. CVTA membership includes companies from every major industry domain affected by in-vehicle telematics, infotainment, and vehicle communications, providing the opportunity to participate in the design, development and deployment of new products and services.
Eclipse Foundation
Eclipse is an open platform for tool integration built by an open community of tool providers. Operating under an open-source paradigm with a common public license that provides royalty-free source code and worldwide redistribution rights, the Eclipse platform enables tool developers to have ultimate flexibility and control over their software technology.
