Wind River Commercial Grade Workbench: The Technology
Develop Technology - Develop Services - Develop Support & Training - Develop Partner Ecosystem
Open, extensible Eclipse framework
Workbench is built on the open framework for tool integration developed by the ecosystem of tools developers who make up the Eclipse Foundation. The Eclipse framework makes it possible for developers to plug in more than 400 highly developed and widely used software tools. It is supported by major hardware, software, and device manufacturing companies, such as Intel, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Texas Instruments, and more.
Support for a broad range of technology choices
Workbench’s broad support of device technology options gives companies the freedom to choose the hardware and software best suited to the devices they want to build. It allows developers to concurrently debug targets employing different target processor architectures and OSes.

End-to-end capability, role-specific product options
Workbench enables companies to standardize on one powerful, flexible development suite across every project phase, from hardware bring-up to post-deployment support, across multiple projects and at diverse worksites. Integration and intelligent workflow allow teams to cut weeks, if not months, from project schedules, while improving product quality.
At the same time, Wind River recognizes that many developers today specialize in one phase of device software development. To give developers capabilities matched to their needs, we offer Workbench in four distinct, role-specific product configurations, all entirely compatible with one another.
These product structure options help developers master relevant Workbench technologies quickly while allowing companies to tailor their tools expenditure to their demonstrated needs.
Wind River Workbench is offered as a tightly integrated component of Wind River platforms or as a stand-alone suite.
Wind River Workbench, Platform Developer Edition
The premier Workbench configuration gives developers access to the full range of capabilities required for hardware bring-up, platform and system software development, and kernel- and application-level development. This release also incorporates deep dynamic visual debugging, system analysis, and validation capabilities.
Wind River Workbench, Application Developer Edition
This configuration provides a powerful development solution for Linux application developers who do not require advanced capabilities, such as hardware bring-up or kernel-level development and debugging support. It can be used to develop and debug on a target device in production, or natively on a Linux host.
Wind River Workbench, Desktop Edition
This configuration is a baseline development suite for rapid prototyping and development of applications running on the host. It offers a powerful editor, code-browsing tools, and a build system integrated with an existing tool chain. It can also be used to maintain large legacy applications, leveraging the power of its code comprehension capabilities and the integration of those capabilities with the editor.
Wind River Workbench, On-Chip Debugging Edition
This configuration of Workbench is designed to meet the needs of developers starting with the early tasks in the device software development cycle – handling initial board bring-up and validation, developing device drivers, incorporating low-level software capabilities, and developing C/C++ applications. This edition offers a feature-rich development suite optimized for the capabilities of JTAG-based debugging using Wind River ICE and Wind River Probe.
World-class tools equal world-class code
Across all development stages, Workbench provides exceptional system visibility, first-rate compilation, debugging, and analysis tools, new tools to automate Unit Testing, and the revolutionary Wind River Diagnostics technology to facilitate dynamic debugging of running systems.
Predictable, reliable product delivery
Clear, reliable roadmaps allow Workbench customers to anticipate upgrades and even to request product enhancements in a systematic and reliable way. Annual spring and fall updates offer new product capabilities and hardware support. Clear and comprehensive documentation makes it easy for customers to decide which innovations to implement and also tells them how.
Flexible business models
Recognizing that different companies have different budgeting and accounting needs, Wind River offers customers a choice of purchasing options and business models. Workbench is available either as a stand-alone product or as an integral part of Wind River platforms. Workbench’s four configurations help companies invest their development dollars wisely on the specific technologies their staff requires.
Under our subscription-based Enterprise Licensing Model (ELM), companies enter into an annual agreement that includes support and maintenance. ELM gives companies the flexibility to change their licensing parameters to match their changing business needs.
Our Perpetual Licensing Model (PUF) allows a company to license Workbench for perpetual use on a particular processor. Support and maintenance are purchased annually. This model benefits companies who subcontract to build constituent portions of large-scale government or industrial projects.
