Wind River Technical Sessions at LinuxWorld

A Standard for Automotive Grade Linux
Tuesday, August 5, 3:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
Mark Hatle, Software Architect, Wind River

Abstract

Linux is gaining a foothold in the automotive market as automotive manufacturers seek alternative means of reducing time-to-market and per-unit device costs. However, the automotive market has unique requirements that exceed the capabilities of the general-purpose Linux kernel, slowing Linux penetration in automotive devices as early adopters work around known gaps. To avoid the fragmentation endemic to other industries, the automotive device industry needs a vendor-neutral, community-based standard that defines the extensions needed to harden the Linux kernel to meet stringent commercial requirements.

Wind River will discuss efforts already underway to define and deliver a truly automotive-grade Linux and identify ways the community can contribute.

Linux for Mobile Handhelds: Commercialization Challenges and
Opportunities

Thursday, August 7, 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Tristan Joo, Product Line Executive, Linux for Mobile Devices, Wind River

Abstract

The mobile handset industry has been plagued by costly Linux fragmentation for years, and the industry has responded with two open Linux platform initiatives, LiMo Foundation and Open Handset Alliance, which take different routes to solving such fragmentation. Wind River has been in the forefront of supporting commercialization of the Android and LiMo platforms. Tristan Joo, Product Line Executive for Linux Platform on Mobile Handhelds, will provide insight into the various challenges associated with commercializing these platforms and opportunities that lie ahead for mobile handheld OEMs and ecosystem partners.

Wind River Panel Discussions at LinuxWorld

Building Intelligent Devices with Embedded Linux: Commercial and Community Approaches
Tuesday, August 5, 10:15 a.m.–11:15 a.m.
Nithya Ruff, Senior Director, Product Management and Marketing, Linux Product Division, Wind River

Abstract

Embedded developers face many choices when embarking upon a new design: processor architecture, chipset, peripherals, operating system, tools, and myriad others. One key decision that accompanies the choice of embedded Linux is whether to "roll your own" or work with commercial toolkit and services companies. This panel brings together key players from both community and commercial sources for embedded Linux, tools, and services to examine the "buy vs. build" conundrum.

Embedded Virtualization: Killer App Enabler or Atomic Flyswatter?
Thursday, August 7, 10:15 a.m.–11:15 a.m.
Glenn Seiler, General Manager, Linux Solutions, Wind River

Abstract

Virtualization in data center and desktop applications is an essential mainstream technology. In the past eight years, Linux and other enterprise software have helped to reinvent mobile/embedded software development, and now virtualization is following suit. This panel examines the drivers for adoption of virtualization in embedded and mobile applications, in particular requirements for preservation of legacy code and performance characteristics; added robustness; security and trusted computing; and IP isolation. It will explore how embedded virtualization differs from its enterprise analog in parameters such as processor support, system software architecture, cross-platform execution, and use of para- and "pure" virtualization technology. Finally it will address the issue of real traction and adoption trends for this technology in emerging intelligent devices designs.

Virtualization – The Bridge to Carrier Grade Linux and COTS Adoption
10:15 a.m.–11:15 a.m.
Tomas Evensen, Chief Technology Officer, Wind River

Abstract

In order to take advantage of the best of both RTOS and Linux, as well as to help ease the migration from past to future, many companies are looking at emerging virtualization technologies as a possible solution. But the choices are almost endless and there are many different technologies to choose from. How do you know which is right for you? Virtualization can be used for deployment of multiple applications, both RTOS and Linux, for migration of a single application, or for consolidation of multiple applications onto a single hardware. This session discusses some of the solutions available for virtualization, and these technologies can be used as a bridge that allows existing IP to be leveraged in new and advanced commercial software and hardware solutions.

Using the Wind River Build System
11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Jeff Polk, Technical Staff, Wind River

Abstract

The Wind River Build System is specifically designed to support development teams working across geographies and projects that have asynchronous contributions from many sources. The Layers feature of the Build System uniquely allows transparent views of the patches and packages that make up a project's distribution. This session provides an overview of the Wind River Build System and the tips and tricks for how to best take advantage of its many features to speed your project's delivery schedule.

Lunch with Key Embedded Linux Developers
12:45 p.m.–1:45 p.m.
Paul Gortmaker and Bill O'Such, Wind River

Abstract

Looking to find ways to help influence the future direction of the embedded Linux kernel? Wondering what the future could hold for your next project? Join Wind River for an informal Q&A session with some of the industry's key embedded Linux developers. Lunch is on us.

Leveraging Open Source in the New Mobile Device Market
3:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
Donn Seeley, Senior Member Technical Staff, Wind River

Abstract

Despite a substantial difference in form factors, the mobile Internet device (MID) and smartphone will converge into one device category in the next 12 to 18 months. Linux will play a significant role in enabling this convergence trend, with similar architecture and package requirements making a smooth transformation. The crossover between device types will drive new combinations of MID stack elements to make exciting new products. This session discusses how Linux will help developers in the new mobile device market deliver service innovation and converged device functionality.
