Combined Commercial and Open Source
Approach to Ignite Innovation in
MID Market Segment

An emerging market segment in the mobile industry is bridging the divide between personal computing and embedded devices—the mobile Internet device (MID). With many potential vertical specifications, unlike the homogenous desktop computer, MIDs will have a wide variety of functional requirements, driving the need for a flexible, full-featured operating platform. These requirements originate from adjacent device categories—mobile handsets, netbooks, laptop computers, and personal navigation devices. From Bluetooth to power management, streaming video to wireless Internet access, each vendor will require unique solutions to serve the MID platform's diverse needs.

Wind River will develop an open, extensible Linux platform for the MID market based on Moblin, a Linux platform highly tuned for mobile devices. The platform will be optimized for Intel Atom chip technologies and, along with customization services, commercial support, and test and validation services, will be used by Wind River to deliver innovative MID solutions to device manufacturers and mobile operators. Wind River will collaborate with Moblin and the independent software vendor (ISV) community to integrate and support valued software components to extend the MID platform. In addition, Wind River contributes code to Moblin and participates in the ongoing growth of that open source project.
